Its oldest section probably dates to the 1820s and the main north block to 1835-1837.","why_significant":"The house is significant for architecture as an intact, representative example of residential construction in Newark Valley. It relates to the context of settlement and early development of the village from 1791 to 1865. The north wing keeps the most elaborate Federal details and the highest degree of period integrity.","narrative":"Set on an eleven-acre lot at 55 Main Street in Newark Valley, this clapboard house grew in stages. A small south wing, probably built in the 1820s as a rental property, was followed by a larger two-story north block built between 1835 and 1837, probably for Dr. William Sutton, who died in 1837. A woodshed wing extends from the rear. The north block holds the finest Federal details: an entrance with sidelights, a nine-light transom, fluted pilasters and a flaring stepped cornice, plus a lunette fanlight in the front gable. Inside are a curved staircase with scrollwork, fluted door frames and a parlor mantel echoing the entrance. The south and rear wings are plainer and have been altered more, including new windows, aluminum siding on the east side and added partitions. The house was listed for its architecture as an intact local example of early residential building.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1835-1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; some windows, siding and interior partitions have been altered over time.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.165099-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001492.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001492/82d7915094-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001492/82d7915094-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Delphinium1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sutton-Chapman-Howland_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Delphinium1</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sutton-Chapman-Howland_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315082","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sutton-Chapman-Howland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7650201"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/sutton-chapman-howland-house-97001492/"}
