It retains integrity of form, materials and detailing from three construction periods, mixing Federal, Greek Revival and Italianate features. It is tied to the contexts of early settlement and later agricultural development in the town.","narrative":"Set north of Newark Valley village on Brown Road, this two-story clapboard farmhouse grew in three stages between about 1835 and 1865. The earliest part, a small Federal-style rear wing with a fanlight entrance and heavy timber frame, was built for Daniel Chamberlain and his wife Esther Farrand on her family's land. Two larger sections followed around 1850 and 1865, the later one probably under the Brockway family, adding a wraparound porch, French doors, wide frieze bands, a spiral staircase and a plaster cornice. Inside, the original plan, plaster walls and wide-plank floors largely survive. The farm once covered more than 90 acres, but the barns are gone, leaving only a granary and two former milk houses behind the house. The property was listed for its architecture, as an intact and representative local residence that shows how a farmhouse expanded through the mid-nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1835-1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal and Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single-dwelling residence; the principal farm buildings have been removed and the house was separated from its farm acreage in 1982.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.186927-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001489.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001489/55ec30f7fb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001489/55ec30f7fb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Delphinium1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Chamberlain_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Delphinium1</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Daniel_Chamberlain_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315094","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Chamberlain_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5216788"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/chamberlain-daniel-house-97001489/"}
