Nowlan and his wife Ann Amelia, with a garage and a chicken house/feed shed.","why_significant":"It is significant under Criterion C as an intact and representative example of residential construction in Newark Valley. It combines simplified Greek Revival ornament with Italianate verticality and keeps its interior plan and many original features. It is tied to the context of industry, commerce and village development from 1865 to 1946.","narrative":"Built around 1868 at 88 South Main Street in Newark Valley, this two-story frame house was made for Edward G. Nowlan, a blacksmith and later a member of the state Assembly, and his wife Ann Amelia. The land was a gift from her brother, D. Williams Patterson, who lived next door. The cross-gabled house blends Greek Revival details, such as gable returns, a frieze band, six-over-six windows and a tripartite front door, with the tall proportions of the Italianate style. Most changes were made at the rear, probably in the 1920s to 1930s, when two families shared the house. Paul Shoultes raised pheasants on the lot during that period and likely enlarged the chicken house, which served as a feed shed. A 1920s garage also survives. The interior keeps its original plan, floors, moldings and plaster walls. The house was listed for its intact, representative architecture, and the two outbuildings contribute to the property.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1868-1940","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains a one-family residence; the owners at the time of the form were adding a residential care facility on the first story.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.275326-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001488.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001488/638202360f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001488/638202360f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Delphinium1","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nowland_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Delphinium1</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nowland_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315090","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nowland_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7066809"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/tioga-county/nowland-house-97001488/"}
