It is the more intact of two known Queen Anne houses in Butler Township and one of only five documented rural examples in the county. Its original plan, millwork and interior features remain largely unchanged.","narrative":"Four miles south of Salem in rural Butler Township, this farmstead centers on a 14-room Queen Anne house finished in 1894 for Franklin Harris, a Civil War veteran and longtime Buckeye Engine Works employee who later farmed dairy cattle and livestock here. The wood-frame house has a sandstone foundation, imbricated slate roof, cross gables, paired front porches with spindlework, and scroll-sawn ornament. Inside, original chestnut floors, carved door surrounds with bullseye corner blocks, ornate fireplaces and a kitchen with an iron crane survive. A bank barn and three sheds from the same period stand nearby, along with one modern metal shed. Architect Albert Cameron of Salem designed the house, his only known rural work in the county. It was listed for its architecture: rural Queen Anne houses are uncommon, and this is one of the two most intact recorded in Columbiana County. The listed area covers about four acres.","period_of_significance":"1894","architect_builder":"Cameron, Albert (architect of Salem, OH)","architectural_style":"Queen Anne; Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings used for storage; the only notable alteration is a brick chimney added about 1995 for central heating.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.706761-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/97001462.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001462/6f0fd765e2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001462/6f0fd765e2-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franklin_Harris_Farmstead.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Franklin_Harris_Farmstead.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987210","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Harris_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14716419"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/columbiana-county/harris-franklin-farmstead-97001462/"}
