It was built in 1913 and is owned by the county.","why_significant":"The bridge is significant under Criterion C as an intact, representative example of early twentieth century highway bridge engineering in rural Oswego County. It is one of a shrinking number of surviving bridges of this type and period in its region. It has also kept an unusually high degree of integrity and its unaltered rural setting.","narrative":"Dam Road crosses the Salmon River in the Town of Orwell, Oswego County, on a two-span steel Pratt through truss bridge built in 1913. Each span is 125 feet long and 14 feet wide, with riveted, pin-connected trusses resting on poured concrete abutments and a midstream pier. The deck is wood planking under a thin asphalt layer, and the original pipe railings survive. The bridge was built during the Salmon River Power Company's hydroelectric development of 1912 to 1914, when roads flooded by the new reservoir had to be relocated. Erie Construction Company of Buffalo erected it for $6,400, using parts made by the Penn Bridge Company of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. It was recognized for its engineering as a late but highly representative example of steel truss highway bridge technology, typical of hundreds built in upstate New York and now increasingly rare. Apart from possibly renewed decking, it remains unaltered in its rural setting. The road across it is closed to traffic.","period_of_significance":"1913","architect_builder":"Penn Bridge Co., Beaver Falls, PA, manufacturer; Erie Construction Co., Buffalo, NY, contractor","architectural_style":"Pratt through truss","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Closed to vehicle traffic; listed as vacant/not in use as its current function, with foot traffic only.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.426451-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97001385.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001385/2540c60e0c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001385/2540c60e0c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antepenultimate","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stillwater_Bridge_2008.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antepenultimate</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stillwater_Bridge_2008.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320887","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stillwater_Bridge_(Salmon_River,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7617280"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/oswego-county/stillwater-bridge-97001385/"}
