White.","why_significant":"The building is argued to be a fine, locally significant example of a Queen Anne commercial building under Criterion C for architecture. Its cone-shaped tower, metal-wrapped oriel bay, decorative cornice and classical details show a shift toward classical trends. It also represents downtown Stockton's rebuilding after the devastating fire of the late 1880s.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of Main Street and Front Avenue in downtown Stockton, Illinois, this two-story brick commercial building dates to 1897. Wilbur E. White bought the lot that August, moved an earlier frame building to the rear, and hired Peter Schroeder to build the new structure around it. Its design reflects the Queen Anne style with classical touches: a diagonal corner entrance, a cast iron storefront, a metal-wrapped oriel bay topped by a cone-shaped tower, a sunburst pediment, urns, finials and corbelled brick. Inside, the original wood floors and a fish-and-shell pattern tin ceiling survive. White opened a department store here, and a clothing store later occupied the space. Upstairs offices housed a dentist and a law practice for decades. The building was listed for its architecture and as a landmark of the rebuilding of Stockton's business center after the fire of the late 1880s. The ground floor now operates as a restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1897","architect_builder":"Schroeder, Peter, Builder","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"First floor is in use as a restaurant after a 1995-1996 renovation; the second-floor offices and apartment have fallen into disrepair, with plans to renovate and rent them.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.154181-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/72/8930/28893072/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/97001339.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001339/7a0fbe7490-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001339/7a0fbe7490-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stockton_IL_W.E._White_Bldg1.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stockton_IL_W.E._White_Bldg1.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893072","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W.E._White_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7945196"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/jo-daviess-county/white-w-e-building-97001339/"}
