West Street (old Route 66) in Odell, Livingston County, Illinois, begun in 1932 by builder Patrick O'Donnell, with service bays added before 1940.","why_significant":"It is argued to be locally significant under Criterion C as a good example of the \"house with canopy\" gas station type with added service bays. It also meets Criterion A for its role providing fuel, oil and repair services to Route 66 motorists and Odell residents. It is described as one of the few remaining Route 66 stations in Illinois that retains its integrity.","narrative":"Built on old Route 66 in Odell, Illinois, this small frame gas station was begun in 1932 after Patrick O'Donnell bought a 60-by-200-foot lot on the southwest side of town. It follows the \"house with canopy\" pattern, a domestic-looking design meant to make travelers feel at home, with a low-pitched gabled roof that extends forward over the pumps, asphalt-shingled walls and banks of one-over-one windows. Before 1940, O'Donnell, a contractor, added a service bay on the north side, bringing mechanical and body repair to a stretch of highway where ten stations competed. Over the years the station sold Standard, Phillips 66 and Sinclair products under various lessees. It was listed for its architecture and for its role serving Route 66 motorists between 1932 and 1956. It is described as one of the few Illinois Route 66 stations retaining its original character. It is now vacant and in disrepair, though judged restorable.","period_of_significance":"1932-1956","architect_builder":"O'Donnell, Patrick, builder","architectural_style":"Other: House with canopy gas station","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as vacant and in a state of disrepair, but containing all original materials and declared restorable by the village engineer.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.261218-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/31/8913/28891331/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/97001338.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001338/3f1ca5f9c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001338/3f1ca5f9c9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0 us","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Standard_Oil_Gasoline_Station5.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/us/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0 us</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Standard_Oil_Gasoline_Station5.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891331","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Oil_Gasoline_Station_(Odell,_Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7598278"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/livingston-county/standard-oil-gasoline-station-97001338/"}
