It retains tall round-arched windows, a corbeled brick entablature and an original cast-iron storefront, one of only three left in Champaign. Its raised Lemont-Joliet limestone sidewalk is described as unique in Champaign County.","narrative":"Standing on the northwest corner of North Market and Taylor streets in downtown Champaign, this two-story brick commercial building dates from around 1870, after an 1868 fire destroyed earlier structures on the block. It is Italianate in style, with a rectangular plan, three tall round-arched second-story windows with limestone keystones, and a corbeled brick entablature. The original cast-iron storefront survives, including fluted pilasters and rope-turned columns around a recessed entry. In front lies a raised sidewalk of large Lemont-Joliet limestone slabs, described as unique in Champaign County. Over time the building housed saloons, a cigar factory on the upper floor, a tea and coffee company, and furniture businesses, with residential space above. Inside, a partial pressed-metal ceiling and Italianate doors and trim remain. The building is vacant, and neglect and roof leaks have damaged parts of the interior. It was recognized for its architecture, as one of few mid-nineteenth-century commercial buildings left in Champaign.","period_of_significance":"c. 1870","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant; interior suffers from lack of maintenance and roof leaks, and no utilities are connected.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.195816-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/0/8918/28891800/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/97001335.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001335/f5d7fce726-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001335/f5d7fce726-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Smallbones","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:201_N_Market_Champaign.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Smallbones</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:201_N_Market_Champaign.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891800","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_at_201_North_Market_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20638860"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/champaign-county/building-at-201-north-market-street-97001335/"}
