The group portrays a man, his wife and their nephew, and a survey of Georgia cemetery sculpture found no comparable monument with multiple figures. It also commemorates Albert G. Williamson, a leading Dodge County businessman.","narrative":"Albert G. Williamson, a Dodge County farmer, timber and naval stores man, and banker, commissioned a marble mausoleum for himself and his wife around 1910, after a traveling salesman offered to make statues from a photograph. Completed in 1912, the double mausoleum in Orphans Cemetery near Eastman, Georgia, sits under a circular canopy carried by five Doric columns of Georgia marble. Beneath it stand life-size statues of Williamson, his wife Martha, and their nephew Jay Gould Williamson, reportedly carved in Italy from Carrara marble. The Cordele Consolidated Marble Co. erected the monument. A survey of Georgia cemetery sculpture found no other monument showing three people, or a married couple, created in the subjects' lifetimes. The nomination presents it as a rare work of funerary art, listed under the art criterion for its artistic value. The 44-foot-square family lot, with its ca. 1912 iron fence, also holds graves of other Williamson relatives, who were known locally as the orphans, which gave the cemetery its name.","period_of_significance":"1912","architect_builder":"The Cordele Consolidated Marble Co. of Cordele, Georgia, erected the monument.","architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a cemetery and work of art; the surrounding Orphans Cemetery was paved and landscaped in 1988.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.28352-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/97001331.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001331/3061bd6bed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001331/3061bd6bed-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williamson_Mausoleum,_Dodge_County,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williamson_Mausoleum,_Dodge_County,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207832","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williamson_Mausoleum_at_Orphans_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8021229"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/dodge-county/williamson-mausoleum-at-orphans-cemetery-97001331/"}
