It is also significant in religion as one of the earliest Methodist churches established in the Augusta area, in continuous use since its beginning.","narrative":"Liberty Methodist Church is a small, one-story wood-frame church built about 1804 in a rural area roughly 13 miles south of Augusta, Georgia. It has a gable roof, two front doors in the gable end, cornice returns, paneled doors and sixteen-over-sixteen windows. Inside is a single open room with original pine floors, wood walls, pulpit and pews, the pews still divided into three sections by two aisles. A cemetery with headstones from the early 1800s lies behind and beside the building. The church is considered significant as one of the oldest surviving rural antebellum churches in Georgia and as an intact example of vernacular church design. It is also tied to the early spread of Methodism around Augusta, with local tradition crediting preacher Samuel Collins with its founding. Membership declined to eight by the 1970s, but restoration brought growth to 104 members. Three newer buildings on the site, including a 1985 fellowship hall, do not contribute to its historic character.","period_of_significance":"c.1804 to 1947","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other/Vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains an active Methodist congregation; the church was restored in the early 1980s and the cemetery is still used for burials.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.754423-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/97001330.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001330/f3141fdbd4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001330/f3141fdbd4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Methodist_Church,_Hephzibah,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Liberty_Methodist_Church,_Hephzibah,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209385","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134456438"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/richmond-county/liberty-methodist-church-97001330/"}
