It retains all the style's character-defining elements and much 1853 fabric. It illustrates American influence on the architecture of a prominent Californio family during the transition from Mexican to American rule.","narrative":"Set on 2.12 acres at the base of the Calaveras foothills beside Los Coches creek in Milpitas, this two-story residence began around 1837 as a one-story adobe. By 1853 Jose Maria and Juana Francisca Alviso had added a wood-frame second floor, a hipped roof and a balcony on three sides. The house measures 53 by 23 feet, with three rooms on each floor and paired French doors opening to the front. The first-floor adobe walls are 22 inches thick, and much original hardware, doors, windows and fireplaces survive. A rear kitchen was added in 1922 after the Cuciz family bought the house, and four 1920s outbuildings from an apricot operation remain. The house is considered a very good example of the Monterey style, which blended Hispanic design and materials with Yankee carpentry, and it is the only remaining example in the Santa Clara Valley and Bay Area. It was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1853","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"OTHER: Monterey Style","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; the property is owned by the City of Milpitas.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.298214-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/97001190.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001190/c0f6c9996d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001190/c0f6c9996d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Unknown authorUnknown author","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jose_Maria_Alviso_adobe_1920.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Unknown authorUnknown author</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jose_Maria_Alviso_adobe_1920.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861643","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Mar%C3%ADa_Alviso_Adobe","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6279463"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/santa-clara-county/alviso-jose-maria-adobe-97001190/"}
