{"nrhp_refnum":"97001109","name":"Cotton Belt Railroad Industrial Historic District","other_names":[],"category":"district","location":{"address":"Along RR tracks, roughly bounded by Hudgins, Dooley, and Dallas Sts.","address_restricted":false,"city":"Grapevine","county":"Tarrant County","state":"TX","lat":32.93353978450003,"lon":-97.07837097331546,"geom_source":"nps_gis"},"listed_date":"1997-09-04","is_nhl":false,"nhl_designated_date":null,"areas_of_significance":["Architecture","Industry","Transportation"],"significance_levels":["local"],"summary":{"what_it_is":"A district of nine contributing and four noncontributing resources along the Cotton Belt (St. Louis Southwestern) railroad right-of-way near Main Street in Grapevine, Tarrant County, Texas. It includes a 1888 section house, a 1901 depot, a 1928 plate girder bridge, the B&D Mills grain and feed complex, and postwar industrial buildings.","why_significant":"The district reflects Grapevine's growth as a rail-served trade center for an agricultural economy, from the arrival of rail service in 1888 through the postwar growth of agribusiness. It is nominated under Criterion A for Commerce and Transportation and Criterion C for Architecture, at the local level. The railroad buildings represent standard company plans and the industrial buildings are typical vernacular metal structures.","narrative":"Along the Cotton Belt rail line just south of Grapevine's commercial district, a cluster of railroad and industrial buildings records how the town became a regional shipping point. The district includes a 1888 section house built for a track maintenance foreman, a 1901 depot with segregated waiting rooms, and a 1928 steel plate girder bridge that carries the track over Highway 26. West of Main Street, the Farmers & Merchants Milling Company, later B&D Mills, grew from a 1902 flour mill into a feed manufacturing complex with a grain elevator and concrete silos. South of the tracks, small metal warehouses and machine shops were mostly built by 1948. Rail service let local farmers ship cotton, sweet potatoes, peanuts and poultry feed products to distant markets. The depot and section house were moved close to their original sites and restored. The district is significant for transportation, commerce and vernacular industrial architecture between 1888 and 1956.","period_of_significance":"1888-1956","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current functions include museum, manufacturing facility and vacant/not in use. The depot and section house were relocated and restored by the Grapevine Heritage Foundation. The mill complex had a fire in 1995 but retains much of its original character.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:24.135156-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/15/9700/40970015/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/97001109.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001109/f1ac5416a8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97001109/f1ac5416a8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cotton_Belt_Railroad_Industrial_Historic_District_5.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cotton_Belt_Railroad_Industrial_Historic_District_5.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40970015","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_Belt_Railroad_Industrial_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14710430"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/tarrant-county/cotton-belt-railroad-industrial-historic-district-97001109/"}
