It contains 507 contributing and 225 noncontributing resources.","why_significant":"The district preserves a largely intact small southwest Georgia town built around a courthouse square, rail lines and cotton-related industry. It includes late Victorian and Revival-style commercial and residential architecture, two historically African-American neighborhoods, and landmark civic and religious buildings. The statement of significance also traces the town's railroad, civic and economic history through the 1910-1939 period.","narrative":"Dawson Historic District takes in nearly all of the town of Dawson in Terrell County, Georgia, spreading outward from the courthouse square. It includes brick commercial blocks along Main Street, such as the 1905 Baldwin Block and the 1905 First State Bank, along with railroad-side warehouses, a ca. 1915 freight depot and an early Ice Plant. Residential areas range from modest shotgun and saddlebag houses in two African-American neighborhoods to large Neoclassical Revival and Queen Anne homes built for doctors, bankers and landowners. Community landmarks include the Gothic Revival county courthouse, a 1914 Carnegie Library, a 1913 log women's clubhouse, a 1923 Colonial Revival post office, several churches from the 1890s, and Carver High School, built with WPA funds. Cedar Hill Cemetery lies at the southern edge. The district was listed because it preserves the architecture and development of a railroad and cotton town from the late nineteenth century into the twentieth.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"Federal architect James A.
