It sits on a 79-acre agricultural parcel crossed by Claverack Creek.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a unique local example of Greek Revival residential architecture that shows how the style was absorbed into the local vernacular. Its intact form, floor plan, interior finishes, grand size and surviving farm setting add to its importance. It also reflects the hamlet's growth as a prosperous rural farming community in the mid-nineteenth century.","narrative":"Set on 79 acres of farmland on the south edge of Claverack hamlet, this two-story frame farmhouse was built around 1840 in the Greek Revival style. It has a five-bay symmetrical front, a hipped roof with four chimneys, six-over-six windows and a center-hall double-pile plan. A rear wing holds the original kitchen, with a cooking fireplace and an iron heating kettle set into the brickwork. Inside, the parlors, bedrooms and hall keep most of their original woodwork, mantels and finishes, including French wallpaper in the stair hall. The front entrance was altered in the late nineteenth century and restored in the mid-twentieth century. Jacob P. Mesick bought the farm in 1831, ran it successfully, served in the New York State Assembly, and is believed to have built the house in the 1840s. The property was listed for its architecture. It is one of few Greek Revival buildings in the hamlet and reflects its prosperous farming past. A garage, a pole barn and a converted barn are non-contributing.","period_of_significance":"ca.1840","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the interior retains much original woodwork, mantels, doors, hardware and ca.1840 French wallpaper. Three non-contributing outbuildings stand on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.366235-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000947.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000947/391b123b0f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000947/391b123b0f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_P._Mesick_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jacob_P._Mesick_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312399","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacob_P._Mesick_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6119085"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/mesick-jacob-p-house-97000947/"}
