It was built in 1892 by the Crain family and consecrated in 1898.","why_significant":"The nomination presents it as a highly intact example of a late 19th-century rural frame family chapel. It blends English Gothic-inspired forms with Queen Anne materials such as stained wood shingles. The interior retains its original trusses, windows, oak furniture and brass fittings.","narrative":"Beside Route 167 in the hamlet of Cullen, this small wood-frame chapel was built in 1892 by Dunham J. Crain as a memorial to his grandparents and to his wife's brother. It served the family's nearby estate, Cullenwood, which was later razed in 1960. Local craftsmen William Wainman, Jacob Salsman and John Brownrigg did the work. The chapel has a steep Gothic roof, a rectangular nave, and a separate square bell tower joined by a hyphen to the sacristy. Stained wood shingles reflect Queen Anne influence. Lancet, rose and cruciform windows hold stained glass, three of them memorials to Crain family members. Inside, exposed scissor trusses, beadboard ceiling sheathing, golden oak pews and polished brass furnishings survive intact. Bishop William C. Doane consecrated the church on May 20, 1898. Still used for summer Episcopal services, it was listed for its architecture and its exceptional integrity as a late, diminutive rural chapel.","period_of_significance":"1892-1898","architect_builder":"Local builder-craftsmen William Wainman, Jacob Salsman and John Brownrigg","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Gothic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in limited seasonal use, with several services held each summer, under the Episcopal diocese.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.904012-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000943.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000943/3c497b1dd6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000943/3c497b1dd6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Agreen54","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_York_-_Church_of_the_Good_Shepherd_-_20180922143621.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Agreen54</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_York_-_Church_of_the_Good_Shepherd_-_20180922143621.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318116","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Good_Shepherd_(Cullen,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5117861"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/church-of-the-good-shepherd-97000943/"}
