It is also the only surviving residence associated with the Remington family of armsmakers, whose early enterprise began nearby. Eliphalet Remington II lived there when he made his first rifle barrel.","narrative":"Near the hamlet of Kinne Corners in Herkimer County, this five-bay, 2 1/2 story stone house was built about 1810 for Eliphalet Remington, who had come from Connecticut and bought 175 acres in 1807. Local masons laid its walls of cut fieldstone. A round-arched stone entrance, flat stone lintels over the windows and a center hall plan flanked by massive chimneys reflect New England building traditions brought to the Mohawk Valley. The same year he moved in, Remington opened a forge on nearby Steele's Creek. His son Eliphalet II lived in the house until 1818 and made his first rifle barrel in 1816, which led to the arms business later centered in Ilion. The family's 1870 Ilion mansion was demolished in 1930, leaving this house as the only surviving Remington residence. Descendants owned it until 1931. It was listed for its association with early settlement and for its Federal-period architecture, and it remains a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"1810","architect_builder":"Built by Eliphalet Remington, using local masons","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the form notes a modern frame barn and a one-story frame garage wing on the parcel.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.117335-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000942.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000942/7d073d5e2b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000942/7d073d5e2b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Remington_House,_Kinne_Corners,_NY,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Remington_House,_Kinne_Corners,_NY,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318180","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remington_House_(Kinne_Corners,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7311830"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/remington-house-97000942/"}
