The surrounding farm setting and outbuildings illustrate the evolution of a working farmstead and the town's growth as an agrarian community.","narrative":"Set on a 20.3-acre farmstead along the Goshen Turnpike in Wallkill, this former tavern and farmhouse began about 1790 as a small, box-like frame dwelling. Around 1824, when John Tears received a tavern license, a larger two-and-one-half-story section was added to the west, with a tripartite entry, Federal mantels and a cherry stair rail. The house keeps wide pine floors, early hardware, and remnants of a cooking hearth and beehive oven in the cellar. Surviving outbuildings include a carriage barn, woodshed, privy, milk house, chicken coop, spring house ruin, carriage steps, a well and stone field walls. The property was recognized for architecture. It shows how an eighteenth-century farmhouse was adapted to early nineteenth-century taste, and its intact farm setting records how a working farm developed over roughly a century. It also offers material for studying rural life in the mid-Hudson and Wallkill Valley regions.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1790 - ca. 1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling; asbestos siding added in the 1930s was recently removed, and original window sash are being restored.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.019353-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000940.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000940/e362646c42-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000940/e362646c42-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Tears_Inn.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">The original uploader was Daniel Case at English Wikipedia.</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Tears_Inn.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75320762","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tears_Inn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6260414"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/orange-county/tears-john-inn-97000940/"}
