Dean of Dean and Dean.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the school is the best surviving example of Streamline Moderne architecture in a Sacramento public building. The style is applied consistently inside and out, and it suited the economy and simplicity of PWA-funded projects. It also reflects the work of Dean and Dean, one of the city's leading school design firms.","narrative":"Theodore Judah School is a neighborhood elementary school at 3919 McKinley Boulevard in Sacramento, built in two phases with federal Public Works Administration funding. Unit 1, with six classrooms, was finished in 1937, and Unit 2 added a kindergarten, administration and health office, auditorium and entry foyer in 1939. Architect Charles F. Dean of Dean and Dean designed it in the Streamline Moderne style, with flat roofs, smooth stucco walls, rounded corners, and little ornament. Inside, the entry lobby is paneled in Philippine mahogany, and the auditorium doors have porthole windows. The school grew from a two-room bungalow annex of David Lubin School that opened in 1927 after parents petitioned for a local school. It is considered the best surviving example of Streamline Moderne in a Sacramento public building, and the style also suited the economy required by PWA projects. A 1948 temporary classroom unit is not counted as historic. The school remains in use.","period_of_significance":"1938-1939","architect_builder":"Dean, Charles F.; Keating, William C.; Peterson, M.R.","architectural_style":"Moderne (Streamline Moderne)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a school; the original boiler, converted to natural gas, still heats the building. The interior is described as virtually unaltered, and the original wood windows on the facade have been replaced with aluminum.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.863536-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/97000810.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000810/6db5da28c7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000810/6db5da28c7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JinCA","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Theodore_Judah_School_(1).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">JinCA</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Theodore_Judah_School_(1).JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100003036","name":"McKinley Park","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/mckinley-park-100003036/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860620","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Judah_School","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15526547"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/sacramento-county/judah-theodore-school-97000810/"}
