It preserves a range of Georgia house types and styles, an intact early 20th-century commercial row tied to the railroad, a rural African-American community, and New South-style yards. The c.1783 Warthen Jail is among the oldest intact buildings in Georgia.","narrative":"Warthen is a small unincorporated crossroads town in northern Washington County, Georgia, and its historic district takes in about 245 acres of houses, stores, churches, cemeteries and open green space. The oldest building is the Warthen Jail, a hand-hewn log structure from about 1783, dating to when Warthen served briefly as the first county seat. The Richard Warthen House, from about 1808-1810, began as two houses joined together. Growth followed the arrival of the railroad in 1884 and peaked between 1900 and 1920, when brick stores, two banks, a cotton warehouse and a drug store were built. Southeast of the crossroads, modest Saddlebag, Central Hallway and Hall Parlor houses record the rural African-American community that formed in the late 1800s. Larger Georgian and Colonial Revival houses sit in park-like yards with brick retaining walls and mature trees. The district was listed for its architecture, commercial history, ethnic heritage and landscape design.","period_of_significance":"c.1783-1947","architect_builder":"J.J.
