The nominated parcel is 1.9 acres.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact, representative local example of late Federal era residential design in the town of Chatham. It notes the finely crafted door surround, Palladian window, reeded corner boards, denticulated cornice and elaborate window surrounds. The house also keeps a high degree of integrity in form, floor plan, exterior moldings and setting, despite the loss of some interior finishes.","narrative":"Built around 1790 on County Route 13 in Old Chatham, this two-story timber-frame house sits on a raised fieldstone foundation beneath a gable roof, with a one-and-one-half-story wing and a woodshed extending east. Its symmetrical five-bay front has a six-panel door with sidelights and pilasters, topped by a Palladian window. Reeded corner boards, a dentiled cornice and ornate window surrounds complete the Federal detailing. Inside, a center-hall plan, wide plank floors and some original fireplaces and mantels survive, though several finishes were replaced in the twentieth century. The builder is unknown. The house was later owned by the prominent Wilbor family. Edward G. Wilbor, elected to the United States Senate in 1866, inherited the farm, and his son Frederick, a civil engineer, later lived there. It was listed as a representative local example of late Federal architecture that retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca.1790-ca.1820","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic and current use is a single-family dwelling; a small non-contributing shed stands on the property.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.770667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000567.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000567/8c3528617b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000567/8c3528617b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"rossograph","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Wilbur_House_Old_Chatham,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">rossograph</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Wilbur_House_Old_Chatham,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317119","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wilbor_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7774823"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/wilbor-the-house-97000567/"}
