It is also considered one of the best surviving local examples of a modified L-plan house.","narrative":"This one-story wood frame house at 313 E. 37th Street in Houston's Independence Heights neighborhood dates from about 1915. It follows a modified L-plan form, with a large hipped roof of asphalt shingles, concrete piers, and wood siding. An inset corner porch on the southeast corner has square posts on brick piers and may date to the 1920s. The three-bay front has paired 2/2 wooden windows and a single wooden door. William Mackey, who lived here, became Camp Commander of the American Woodmen Camp 272 and Tent 272 by 1915. The camp was one of three active fraternal organizations in the community, and such groups gave African American residents social outlets and insurance benefits. The house was also the first meeting place of the Unity School of Christianity. It was listed for its local importance in Black ethnic heritage and as one of the best surviving examples of the modified L-plan, a largely intact house reflecting traditional local building preferences.","period_of_significance":"c. 1915-1947","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular Modified L-plan","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling, as in its historic function; described as largely intact.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.547496-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/40/9694/40969440/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/97000547.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40969440","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Mackey_House_(Houston,_Texas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q60750211"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/harris-county/mackey-william-house-97000547/"}
