It has a brick foundation, molded weatherboard siding, a gable roof and a one-story dining room and kitchen wing at the west end.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is unrivaled in Yadkin County for its Federal-style interior woodwork and painted finishes, and that its intact Federal-period wood graining makes it a leading example of that decorative treatment in North Carolina. It is presented as one of the finest surviving examples of Federal-period wood graining in the state and as a statewide-significant decorative arts property.","narrative":"Built around 1820 by Virginian Davis Durrett, this two-story frame house on the west bank of the Yadkin River is a large Federal-style dwelling with four rooms of unequal size on each floor and two separate enclosed stairs. Its interior retains original Federal doors, mantels, wainscots and trim, and the walls and doors carry wood graining over a yellow ocher base beneath a mahogany-colored glaze, with deep green trim. The graining and polychromed finishes are regarded as among the finest and best preserved of their type in North Carolina. The house passed to Isaac Jarratt in 1835, a slave trader and merchant who later served as chairman of the county court and as a Confederate state senator, and it remained in the Jarratt family for more than 150 years. A mid-nineteenth-century dining room and early twentieth-century kitchen were added at the west end. The house was sold in 1996 with a preservation covenant.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1820","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house is undergoing careful restoration after a period of lack of maintenance and is protected by a preservation covenant held by the Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina, Inc.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.031686-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/88/7228/47722888/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/97000474.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47722888","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durrett-Jarratt_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q20708771"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/yadkin-county/durrett-jarratt-house-97000474/"}
