It also argues the arbor is associated with the religious and social history of the area, particularly the Methodist camp meeting tradition.","narrative":"Bethel Church Arbor is a large, open timber-framed shelter in rural Midland, Cabarrus County, built as a place for camp meeting worship. Its exposed post-and-beam frame, with oak timbers dressed by adze in its inner portion and circular-saw timbers in its outer bay, is covered by a metal-clad hipped roof with flared eaves. The arbor stands on a church campus beside Bethel Methodist Church. Its exact construction date is unknown, but a local newspaper described the campgrounds in 1878, and the arbor is first documented in 1912. Camp meetings were held there annually in August, and as many as thirty-two family cabins once ringed the structure. The arbor is regarded as an excellent example of a nineteenth-century religious arbor, and it is one of only two surviving arbors in Cabarrus County. It is also important for its connection to the Methodist camp meeting tradition and to community social life. The arbor remains in use for annual homecoming and other church and community events.","period_of_significance":"third quarter nineteenth century - 1947","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":null,"criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used for annual homecoming, special services, wedding rehearsals, vacation bible school and a monthly evening worship program.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.511376-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/73/7193/47719373/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/97000472.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000472/9a7579c204-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000472/9a7579c204-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"RoxylovesHistory","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bethel_Church_Arbor_2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RoxylovesHistory</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bethel_Church_Arbor_2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719373","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethel_Church_Arbor","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17985865"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/cabarrus-county/bethel-church-arbor-97000472/"}
