It was built 1889-1891 for an Episcopal congregation.","why_significant":"The church is a highly intact example of smaller-scale Romanesque Revival religious architecture. It also served for over 100 years as a center of social activity and religious education in Watertown. As an offshoot of Trinity Episcopal Church, it reflects the city's rapid growth in the late 19th century.","narrative":"Built between 1889 and 1891 at the corner of Clay and Sterling Streets in Watertown, this Episcopal church is a one-story Romanesque Revival building of light grey, quarry-faced ashlar stone from Gouverneur. Its east front is marked by a three-story crenelated square tower and round-arched openings with stained glass, and hexagonal apse-like bays with tent roofs project on the north and south sides. Inside, the nave has groined vaults on wood columns and original pews. The architect was Lawrence B. Valk & Son of New York City, and John Hose of Watertown was the builder. The congregation began in 1867 as an offshoot of Trinity Episcopal Church and took the name St. Paul's in 1903. It was listed for its architecture, for its long role in the city's social life and religious education, and as evidence of Watertown's late 19th-century growth. Warren Hall was added beneath the church in 1922.","period_of_significance":"1891 - 1922","architect_builder":"Architect: L.B.
