The main block dates to about 1870, and the property includes a meathouse/icehouse.","why_significant":"Brexton was added because new information showed it housed the Brexton Female Seminary, a private girls' boarding school run by the Misses Page from 1882 until 1903. A portion of the house appears to have been used strictly as a school, which is unusual among the county's private schools. It adds to the district's story of education and is fairly unaltered.","narrative":"Brexton is a two-story frame house on a small wooded lot along Route 255 in Millwood, next to the Carter Hall property. Its main block, built about 1870, is a three-bay vernacular I-house with a central passage, weatherboard siding, a stone foundation and a standing-seam metal roof. A side wing, probably added in 1882, and a rear wing from the 1880s or 1890s complete the house, and a frame meathouse/icehouse stands in the southeast corner of the lot. In 1882 sisters Mary and Jane Page enlarged the house to run a boarding school, known as the Brexton Female Seminary. The side wing appears to have served as the classroom, with boarding rooms upstairs, and the school operated until 1903. Student names and dates are etched in several second-floor windows. Newly discovered information about this use led to Brexton's addition to the Greenway Historic District, where it joins other schools that illustrate the growth of education in Clarke County.","period_of_significance":"CA. 1870-1903","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular I-house (OTHER: I-house; NO STYLE: Vernacular), with Late Greek Revival-style interior woodwork","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling with a secondary structure; the front porch is missing and the rear porch has been closed in.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.675264-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/44/6802/41680244/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/97000154.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000154/8343c80fb9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000154/8343c80fb9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greenway_Historic_District_Marker.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greenway_Historic_District_Marker.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"14000010","name":"Chapel Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/chapel-rural-historic-district-14000010/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680244","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenway_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712400"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/greenway-historic-district-boundary-increase-97000154/"}
