Main Street in Culpeper, Virginia, built in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century by an unknown builder. It is now owned by the Town of Culpeper.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a rare example of plank log construction and Culpeper's oldest and only surviving log structure from the early settlement period. It is also the only surviving modest working-class residence from the early-nineteenth-century neighborhood of small craftsmen at the south end of town. It illustrates a way of life under-represented on the Register.","narrative":"Burgandine House, at 807 S. Main Street in Culpeper, is a modest story-and-a-half dwelling of plank log construction dating from the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Local tradition holds it is the town's oldest residence. Weatherboards now cover the log walls, and a brick exterior end chimney, wide pine floors and an enclosed corner staircase survive from early periods. A north wing added around 1853 was removed in 1966, when the house was donated to the Town of Culpeper. It appears on a ca. 1835 town map at the extreme southern edge, a working-class area of small craftsmen and rental properties, including free Black tradesmen. It is the only dwelling from that neighborhood still standing. It was judged significant as a rare plank log building, simpler than the Slaughter-Hill House and Locust Grove, the two other known examples in the region, and as a record of everyday life in early Virginia. It is presently vacant.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1800","architect_builder":"UNKNOWN","architectural_style":"Other: PLANK LOG CABIN","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function listed as vacant/not in use; the house has served periodically as headquarters for the Culpeper Historical Society, and the original main structure stands with nearly all its improvements intact.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.472835-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/7/6803/41680307/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/97000153.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000153/fc3f63ab3b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000153/fc3f63ab3b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:BURGANDINE_HOUSE,_CULPEPER_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"09000663","name":"South East Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/south-east-street-historic-district-09000663/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680307","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgandine_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712106"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/culpeper-county/burgandine-house-97000153/"}
