It is one of only four pre-1850 houses in town built wholly or partly of brick. It retains a high degree of integrity in its form, floor plan and interior finishes, and its lunette attic windows are an unusual detail.","narrative":"Set close to the old King's Highway in the Town of Rochester, Ulster County, this brick dwelling is believed to date from about 1807, when Sahler purchased the property. It is a rectangular, five-bay Federal style house with a central entrance framed by fluted Doric pilasters and sidelights, and a pair of semicircular lunette windows in the attic level of the facade. Most early houses in the town were built of fieldstone, and this is one of only four surviving pre-1850 homes there made wholly or partly of brick. Local tradition holds that the bricks were fired in a kiln at the rear of the property. Inside, the center-hall plan, original woodwork, plaster, wide-plank floors and period mantels remain. A late 1980s restoration replaced a deteriorated rear wing with a larger two-story addition, and a late nineteenth century barn now serves as a guesthouse. The house was listed for its architectural character and its intact rural setting.","period_of_significance":"ca.1807-ca.1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still a single dwelling in current use; a late-1980s restoration replaced the deteriorated rear wing with a two-story addition, and the late nineteenth century barn has been renovated as a guesthouse.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.087567-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000118.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315204","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._Sahler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6107054"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/sahler-j-house-97000118/"}
