It highlights a monumental two-story portico, a symmetrical composition, and largely intact interior features. It is described as an unusually well-articulated example of the rural Greek Revival tradition.","narrative":"Built about 1830 by Henry Koon, this brick house at 171 Pawling Avenue in Troy is a two-story, side-hall-plan residence with a stone foundation and a gable roof. A monumental two-story portico with four fluted Ionic columns, a full entablature and a pediment dominates the front. Inside, matching double parlors, paneled pocket doors, molded trim and plaster walls survive largely intact. Later changes include an 1870 renovation that brought Italianate doors and a side porch, plus twentieth-century alterations such as a rear porch and a kitchen and bathroom. Koon was a lawyer, local figure, and a founder of the Universalist Church, though little else is known of his life. The house was listed for its architecture. It is presented as one of only several highly developed Greek Revival buildings in Troy, and as a once-rural farmhouse whose design reflects its owner's aspiration for elegance. It remains a single-family dwelling on about a third of an acre.","period_of_significance":"ca.1830","architect_builder":"Henry Koon (builder)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; some rooms were converted to an apartment and a kitchen and bathroom were added in the twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.55685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000112.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000112/10449587c4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000112/10449587c4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Prattk19","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Koon_House_171_Pawling_Avenue_Troy.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Prattk19</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Henry_Koon_House_171_Pawling_Avenue_Troy.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321248","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Koon_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5724455"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rensselaer-county/koon-henry-house-97000112/"}
