It is one of only seven surviving two-story masonry houses of its type identified in a 1994 survey of Rochester's pre-1850 masonry dwellings. The two-story, five-bay, center-entrance plan is typical of the form but generally uncommon.","narrative":"Set on a small knoll on the west side of Samsonville Road in Rochester, this ninety-acre farm centers on a two-story stone house built in a simple Adamesque style around the turn of the nineteenth century. The east front is five bays wide with a central recessed entry framed by sidelights and Doric pilasters, and the interior keeps its original central hall plan and many early finishes and moldings. A large cross-gable was added in the 1880s. Nearby are a bank barn from the 1880s, a storage shed, a small shed, a privy and a low stone retaining wall, all counted as contributing, plus three later seasonal laborer cottages. The Schoonmaker family built the farm and held it until 1963. A 1994 survey found it to be one of only seven surviving two-story masonry houses among Rochester's pre-1850 stone dwellings, a form typical of the Hudson Valley but generally uncommon.","period_of_significance":"ca.1820 - ca.1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal (described as a simple Adamesque style)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling and agricultural property; the form says the present owners raise beef cattle and that the property was restored after 1963.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.959939-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000109.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000109/4b9e36eb39-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000109/4b9e36eb39-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Larry Arvidson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050079_(135)_Schoonmaker_Stone_House_%26_Farm,_Samsonville_Rd.,_Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY_1_edited-1.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Arvidson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050079_(135)_Schoonmaker_Stone_House_%26_Farm,_Samsonville_Rd.,_Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY_1_edited-1.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315202","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schoonmaker_Stone_House_and_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7432754"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/schoonmaker-stone-house-and-farm-97000109/"}
