Its most distinctive features are a 'Wrightian' Prairie-style interior and a first-story plan that steps with the hillside. It retains integrity of construction, form, materials and detailing inside and out.","narrative":"Built in 1912 at 827 Lancaster Avenue in Syracuse, this two-story frame house was designed by Ward Wellington Ward for Frederick Welsh, a general agent for the American Express Company. It sits on a steep hillside in the Westminster Tract, a subdivision laid out in 1891, on a block that holds three other Ward houses. The exterior combines stucco on the first story with imitation half-timbering above, under a steeply pitched clipped gable roof with brackets and gabled dormers. Inside, rectilinear lines and dark wood against white walls recall Prairie-style work. The living room has paired pilasters and round columns supporting exposed beams, and the dining room has built-in corner cabinets. The dining room and kitchen are stepped up from the living room and front hall to follow the slope. The original plan and most principal-room finishes survive, despite a lost mantle and changes to the kitchen and rear sleeping porch. It was listed for its intact representation of Ward's residential architecture.","period_of_significance":"1912","architect_builder":"Ward, Ward Wellington","architectural_style":"Arts and Crafts","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in good condition on the exterior and interior, and still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.934117-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000081.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000081/7334f48ecc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000081/7334f48ecc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Welsh_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Welsh_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100011439","name":"Westcott-University Neighborhood Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/westcott-university-neighborhood-historic-district-100011439/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314013","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welsh_House_(Syracuse,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7981923"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/welsh-house-97000081/"}
