It blends Colonial Revival and Arts and Crafts elements and retains its original plan, finishes and built-in features. It meets the registration requirements of the Ward multiple property context.","narrative":"This two-story frame house at 518 Danforth Street in Syracuse's old village of Salina was designed by architect Ward Wellington Ward and completed in 1912. It combines Colonial Revival features, such as a symmetrical front facade, side-gabled roof, corner pilasters and fanlights in the gable ends, with Arts and Crafts details, including wood joinery, lattice work on the porches and decorative brickwork. Inside, the living room fireplace uses long red bricks with Mercer tile insets, which is Ward's only known use of that brick. The original plan, hardwood floors, built-in cabinets and laundry chutes survive. The main exterior change is narrow aluminum siding added over the clapboard in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Robert Chapman of the Chapman Lumber Co. and his wife gave the house to their son John as a wedding present. Only two families have owned it. It was listed for its architecture as an intact example of Ward's residential work.","period_of_significance":"1912","architect_builder":"Ward, Ward Wellington","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival/Arts and Crafts","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; described as in good condition on the exterior and interior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.549155-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/97000072.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000072/533966b17d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/97000072/533966b17d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ChapmanHs_2007_12_16sm1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ChapmanHs_2007_12_16sm1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75314047","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapman_House_(Syracuse,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5073293"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/onondaga-county/chapman-house-97000072/"}
