The ranch began in 1905 for G. Gunby Jordan.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the main house is an intact 1920s Tudor Revival design with an unusual poured-concrete structure built after a fire, and the work of R. Kennon Perry of Robert and Company. The formal landscaping and the intact farm complex add to its value. It is also tied to G. Gunby Jordan, a leading business and civic figure in Columbus and Georgia.","narrative":"Green Island Ranch is a 92-acre estate on the north side of Columbus, Georgia, centered on the highest point in Muscogee County. G. Gunby Jordan bought the first 35 acres in 1905 as a country retreat and later made it his full-time home. A fire around 1920 destroyed the first house, and the present Tudor Revival residence, designed by R. Kennon Perry of Robert and Company, was finished in 1922. Its walls, floors and even attic are poured concrete, with half-timbered detailing added for effect, and most of the original paneling, mantels and woodwork survive. Stone gates, terraces and garden remnants reflect landscaping supervised by John B. Ryer, Jr., and maintained by gardener John Brandt. South of the house, a farm complex includes a caretaker's house, a board-and-batten barn, a stable and a rare brick power house. The property was listed for its architecture, landscape design, and its link to Jordan, a prominent Columbus business and civic leader.","period_of_significance":"1905-1946","architect_builder":"Robert and Co. /R.
