It is also significant as a typical small early-to-mid-nineteenth-century Ohio tavern, with a floorplan and roadside location that reflect its public-house role.","narrative":"Built in 1838 of bricks fired on the property, this two-and-one-half-story I-house with a one-and-one-half-story kitchen ell sits on 2.22 wooded acres about two miles north of New Carlisle, Ohio. It was named for its owner, John Olinger, and originally served as a tavern on the old Troy and Springfield Road, now Marquart Road. It was reportedly the middle of three taverns spaced seven miles apart along the twenty-eight miles between the two towns. The symmetrical facade, load-bearing brick walls and parlour fireplace with Doric pilasters, entablature and beaded mantel show Federal influence. The original layout included a taproom, public dining room, ladies' parlour, family bedroom, two small rooms to rent, a kitchen and a servants' loft reached by an outside stair. Original wrought iron door hardware survives. Its architecture, floorplan and former function make it a representative small Ohio tavern. Today it serves as a private home.","period_of_significance":"1838","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as a single dwelling; the privy still works and the garage is still used for its original purpose.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.838006-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/96001619.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001619/4f7c877b70-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001619/4f7c877b70-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ollie%27s_Tavern_southeastern_angle.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ollie%27s_Tavern_southeastern_angle.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987052","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q137606885"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/clark-county/ollies-tavern-96001619/"}
