The early hewn-log, half-dovetail pen reflects the first settlement of Hart County, and the c.1860 central-hall cottage shows a farm family's rising wealth and awareness of current style. It shows how houses evolved, with the first dwelling becoming a rear ell.","narrative":"Located on an unpaved rural lane south of Hartwell, this farmhouse began about 1810 as a one-room log dwelling built by Archibald Mewborn, who came to Georgia in the early 1800s and assembled roughly 700 acres in what is now Hart County. The original pen, made of hewn pine logs joined with half-dovetail notches, later became the rear ell. About 1860 his son Martin Marion Mewborn added a frame central-hall cottage against the log section, nearly doubling the house and signaling his growing prosperity. After the Civil War, two small \"preacher rooms\" were enclosed at the ends of the front porch, probably for guests or travelers. The house stayed in the Mewborn family for three generations, then passed to the Dove family in 1940. Its interior finish remains plain and largely original. The house is valued as an intact example of how a settler's log dwelling evolved into a fashionable farmhouse. A rehabilitation carried out between 1992 and 1995 stabilized the building and restored interior woodwork.","period_of_significance":"c.1810-1865","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"OTHER: central-hallway log house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a single dwelling.
