It sits on just over one acre with a garage and ice house.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a distinctive, highly intact example of Classical Revival architecture, with an eclectic mix of Greek, Roman and Palladian-inspired details. It also recalls the Strough family, prominent local citizens. The interior plan is unusual for its period and the house has changed little since construction.","narrative":"Built in 1911 on Clayton Street in LaFargeville, this one-and-one-half story wood frame house shows Classical Revival design in an eclectic form. A low hipped roof and a full-width porch dominate the front. The porch has a central pediment with dentils and a lunette window, flanked by projecting open sections, and eight Ionic columns support it. Full-length French doors with round-arched hoods open onto the porch. Inside, the original plan survives, with rooms arranged around a central living room in a way recalling early Roman houses, a red limestone fireplace, a beamed ceiling and a curved enclosed staircase. Byron J. Strough, a longtime teacher, town supervisor and hay and grain dealer, built the house at age 67 for his retirement, probably designing it himself with the help of catalogs. A garage and an ice house also survive from the period. The house is valued as a highly intact example of early twentieth century residential architecture and as a reminder of a prominent local family.","period_of_significance":"1911","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the porch balustrades were removed for repair and described as under restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.003127-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001549.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313128","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byron_J._Strough_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5004393"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/jefferson-county/strough-byron-j-house-96001549/"}
