It is distinguished by recessed decorative panels between the first and second floors, which are rare in the state. It was also the childhood home of John Warwick Daniel, a Civil War veteran, U.S. senator and orator.","narrative":"Built in 1826 for John Marshall Warwick, a Lynchburg tobacco merchant who later served as mayor, this two-story brick house at Court and Eighth Streets sits on the crest of what became Court House Hill, above the James River. It has a symmetrical three-bay facade, Flemish bond brickwork, a hipped metal roof and a Georgian floor plan. Its most unusual feature is a pair of recessed panels between the first and second floor windows, decorated with garlands and rosettes. Similar panels once appeared on the Executive Mansion in Richmond, and molds of the Lynchburg examples were used there in 1988. Inside, the house combines Federal and Greek Revival trim, eleven fireplaces and carved panels above the doors. It is believed to have been designed by John Wills. The house was also the boyhood home of Warwick's grandson, Senator John Warwick Daniel. It was listed for its architecture and its relatively unaltered condition among Lynchburg houses of the period.","period_of_significance":"1826-1880","architect_builder":"unknown (built by John Marshall Warwick; believed designed by John Wills)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historically a single dwelling; currently used as offices, with upper floors partitioned into apartments.
