Its collection of ten domestic and agricultural outbuildings makes it one of Fauquier County's most completely preserved nineteenth-century farmsteads.","narrative":"Weston is a farmstead near Casanova in Fauquier County, Virginia, built around a rambling country house that began as a one-and-one-half-story log dwelling around 1810, probably for Thomas Fitzhugh. Charles Joseph Nourse bought the property in 1859 and enlarged the house in 1860, 1870 and 1893, producing an L-shaped form with sawn bargeboards and steep gables typical of Carpenter Gothic. The original log walls are now covered in weatherboard outside but remain exposed inside. Ten surviving nineteenth-century outbuildings include a kitchen and wash house, smokehouse, springhouse, blacksmith shop, corncrib, stable and barns, which together make the farm unusually complete for the county. The Nourse family kept the property for a century, using it at times as a school, a girls' summer camp and a wartime hospitality center for servicemen. In 1959 ten acres passed to the Warrenton Antiquarian Society, which runs it as a museum.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1810-1893","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Gothic (Carpenter Gothic influence)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Operated as a house and farm museum by the Warrenton Antiquarian Society since 1959.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.672494-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/9/6806/41680609/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/96001447.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001447/69f5e93e61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001447/69f5e93e61-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Doctree","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weston_Farmstead_mainhouse_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doctree</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Weston_Farmstead_mainhouse_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680609","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weston_(Casanova,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713517"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/fauquier-county/weston-96001447/"}
