It is also a highly sophisticated Beaux Arts design, little altered on the exterior, and a major local landmark on Main Street.","narrative":"Built in 1919-1920 at the corner of East Main and Barbour streets in Clayton, this two-story brick bank is faced with Indiana limestone and designed in the Beaux Arts Classical style. Its front facade features paired three-quarter Ionic columns, carved garlands, a classical entablature engraved with the bank's name, and a balustraded parapet. The Clayton Banking Company, founded in 1899 by local businessmen, commissioned an unknown architect to replace its small original quarters, and the new building opened in June 1920 to local acclaim. The bank served as the town's major lending institution and stayed solvent through the Depression, leading First Citizens Bank to buy it in 1939. First Citizens operated a branch here until 1994, then donated the building to the Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce. The exterior is little changed, though the interior was altered in 1958-59 and about 1967. A 1982 survey called it the most stylish commercial building in Clayton.","period_of_significance":"1919/1920-1946","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Beaux Arts","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Donated by First Citizens Bank to the Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce in 1995 and used as its headquarters; exterior little altered, interior changed in 1958-59 and about 1967.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.789189-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7209/47720996/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/96001444.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001444/e5e867ab1c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001444/e5e867ab1c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clayton_Banking_Company_Building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Clayton_Banking_Company_Building.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"10000314","name":"Clayton Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/clayton-historic-district-10000314/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720996","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clayton_Banking_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461027"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/johnston-county/clayton-banking-company-building-96001444/"}
