It is also tied to the railroad's role in the economic and physical development of Horseheads. It is described as one of the last structures in the village directly associated with the railroad.","narrative":"Built in 1866 beside the tracks on West Broad Street in Horseheads, this one-story brick depot replaced an earlier station. It has an Italianate design with a gable roof, wide overhangs and large wooden brackets resting on carved stone corbels. About two-thirds of the floor area served freight storage and transfer, while the rest held an agent's and telegrapher's office, an express office and a waiting room. The Chemung Railway, later the Northern Central Railway and then the Pennsylvania Railroad, used the station until 1956. It was later a feed store until 1994. Inside, the exposed heavy-timber roof trusses, plank freight floor and an original freight scale survive. The depot was listed for its architecture as a typical standardized rural depot and for its link to the railroad that drove the village's growth after the canal era. It is among the last railroad-related structures left in Horseheads.","period_of_significance":"1866-1956","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed in Section 6 as vacant and not in use; the building was purchased in 1994 for retail use and partly altered inside.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.444436-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001442.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001442/d4968a25fb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001442/d4968a25fb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chemung_Railway_Depot_Track_Side.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Chemung_Railway_Depot_Track_Side.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316800","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseheads_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5090682"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/chemung-county/chemung-railway-depot-horseheads-96001442/"}
