Thompson.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the bridge is architecturally significant as a rural vernacular stone arch vehicular bridge, one of three intact examples in Shandaken and an extremely rare survivor in Ulster County. It shows traditional masonry bridge construction techniques and retains a high degree of integrity and its natural setting.","narrative":"Carrying Mill Street over a shallow ravine in the hamlet of Pine Hill, this small stone arch bridge was built around 1897 by local mason Matthew G. Thompson. Town board records show approval of two arch bridges at Pine Hill in 1897 and payment of $208 to Thompson for one of them in 1900. The single round arch spans about 12 feet between abutments and is built of locally quarried stone, with rough-dressed voussoirs, a keystone and mortared spandrel walls. The nomination describes the traditional building sequence of foundations, temporary wooden centering, arch, spandrel walls and roadway fill. It is one of three surviving stone arch bridges in Pine Hill, alongside those on Elm Street and Birch Creek Road. The bridge is town-owned, remains intact, and was listed for its architectural value as a rare example of a largely vanished craft in Ulster County.","period_of_significance":"ca.1897","architect_builder":"Thompson, Matthew G., Mason","architectural_style":"OTHER (rural vernacular stone arch bridge)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Town-owned road bridge, still used for transportation and described as completely intact from its original construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.275717-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001439.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001439/a8f57f238f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001439/a8f57f238f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Street_Stone_Arch_Bridge,_Pine_Hill,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mill_Street_Stone_Arch_Bridge,_Pine_Hill,_NY.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"12000513","name":"Pine Hill Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/pine-hill-historic-district-12000513/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322679","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mill_Street_Stone_Arch_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6858428"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/mill-street-stone-arch-bridge-96001439/"}
