It is notable for its finely crafted Adamesque interior woodwork and its high degree of integrity. It is also an important local landmark that reflects post-Revolutionary development in Coeymans.","narrative":"Set on the south side of NYS Route 143 in Coeymans Hollow, this one-and-one-half-story timber frame house dates to about 1810 and is thought to have been built by Israel Shear soon after his marriage around 1805. It has a five-bay symmetrical front with a center entrance framed by Corinthian columns, side lights, a pediment and a fanlight, and gable end chimneys on both sides. A one-story wing on the east may be older, perhaps about 1800. Inside, a central hall divides two large rooms, and the woodwork is notably fine: arched architraves, shell-motif and classical mantels, a delicate stair balustrade and raised panel work. Wide plank floors and original hardware survive. The house was listed for its architecture, as a rare and well-preserved example of Federal and Adamesque residential design in the area. Its rural setting beside Hannacroix Creek recalls the post-Revolutionary growth of Coeymans.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1810","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal (Adamesque)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in use as a single dwelling; described as largely unchanged in exterior appearance and interior layout since construction, with twentieth-century plumbing and central heating added.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.202646-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001436/7a994bf97a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001436/7a994bf97a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Israel_Shear_House_May_10.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Israel_Shear_House_May_10.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316330","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Shear_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706580"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/albany-county/shear-israel-house-96001436/"}
