It is a builder's adaptation of the Greek Revival style, noted for rigorous simplicity, and the sanctuary and structure remain virtually unaltered since 1832.","narrative":"Built in 1832 on West Settlement Road in Ashland, Greene County, this small Methodist church is a single-story, four-by-three-bay building framed with hand-hewn posts and beams on a high limestone foundation. Narrow clapboards cover the walls, and wide corner pilasters carry a full entablature and molded cornice. Tall twelve-over-twelve windows and a double-door entry with Doric pilasters give the modest frame building a sense of scale. Inside, the nave, chancel, vestibule and balcony survive intact, along with original pews, a carved balustrade, a lectern, chairs and an oil chandelier. Layers of early wallpaper remain on the walls and ceiling. The church was listed for its architecture as an unusually well-preserved rural meeting house in the Greek Revival style, a rare survivor in the Catskill Region. It has been vacant for several decades, and its windows are currently covered with plywood to protect the sash. Its future remains uncertain.","period_of_significance":"1832","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant for the past several decades; windows are covered with plywood panels to protect the sash.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.253938-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001435.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001435/09be7f35da-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001435/09be7f35da-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RobertDrake2015","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Settlement_Methodist_Church_10-30-2015-3.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RobertDrake2015</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:West_Settlement_Methodist_Church_10-30-2015-3.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318080","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Settlement_Methodist_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7986468"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/west-settlement-methodist-church-96001435/"}
