Donnell with Carnegie funds.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is significant for its restrained Jacobethan Revival architecture and for its link to Andrew Carnegie's library philanthropy and the growth of public education. It is one of only three Carnegie libraries on Long Island outside New York City. It retains a high level of historic integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1914 at the corner of Main Street and Woodside Avenue in Northport, this small brick building served as the village's public library until 1967. Since 1974 it has housed the Northport Historical Society Museum. New York City architect Harry E. Donnell designed it in a restrained Jacobethan Revival style, and the Northport firm of Vail and Call built it. Funds came from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, on land bought by the Northport Literary and Library Union. Deep-red tapestry brick, a slate roof, tall casement windows and a plaster barrel-vaulted reading room mark the design. Two rear additions, from 1958 and 1985, do not contribute to its significance. The building follows Carnegie Corporation guidance favoring simple, practical plans for small libraries. It is one of only three Carnegie libraries on Long Island outside New York City, and it remains a local landmark with a high level of historic integrity.","period_of_significance":"1914","architect_builder":"Harry E.
