Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman houses make up most of the streetscapes, alongside the Varina Mercantile Building and the spring itself.","narrative":"Fuquay Springs Historic District is a compact, roughly five-block neighborhood in the small Wake County town of Fuquay-Varina. It grew up around the Fuquay Mineral Spring, discovered about 1850 and developed in the early twentieth century as a health resort that drew thousands of visitors through the late 1920s. Hotels such as the Ben-Wiley and the Barham housed those guests, and the surrounding streets filled with modest one- and two-story frame and brick houses. Queen Anne and Colonial Revival homes sit beside several large Craftsman bungalows, with features like exposed rafter ends, gable brackets and tapered porch posts on brick piers. The two-story brick Varina Mercantile Building, built in 1899, is the only other non-residential property besides the spring. Local builder A. Y. Hairr constructed a number of prominent homes here in the 1920s and 1930s. Of thirty-five resources, twenty-eight contribute to the district, which keeps its original design, setting, scale and materials. It was recognized for its resort-era history and its intact early-twentieth-century architecture.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1899-1946","architect_builder":"Hairr, A.
