It shows typical Middle-period cobblestone features and retains a high degree of physical integrity. It is one of only ten surviving cobblestone buildings in Mendon.","narrative":"Built around 1847, probably by Roswell Whitcomb, this modest cobblestone farmhouse sits on the south side of Pond Road in rural Mendon, southeast Monroe County. It is a one and one-half story, three-bay, center-hall cottage with a gable-front plan, walls of variously colored field cobbles, cut limestone quoins, stone sills and flat-arched stone lintels, and original 9/6 double-hung windows. A frame and cobblestone kitchen wing extends from the rear. The house stands on a lot of about 19 acres surrounded by working farms and open land, though no farm outbuildings remain. Its interior was heavily renovated in the mid-twentieth century and is not counted as historic fabric. The house was recognized as a well-preserved example of the Middle period of cobblestone construction, roughly 1835 to 1845, and as representative of vernacular Greek Revival architecture. It is one of only ten surviving cobblestone buildings in Mendon and is considered one of the town's finest local landmarks.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1847","architect_builder":"Roswell Whitcomb (believed builder)","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is a single dwelling; the interior was extensively renovated in the mid-twentieth century and no outbuildings survive.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.495907-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001396.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001396/8e81777085-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001396/8e81777085-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Ammodramus","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Whitcomb_Cobblestone_Farmhouse_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ammodramus</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Whitcomb_Cobblestone_Farmhouse_1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313581","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitcomb_Cobblestone_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7994226"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/whitcomb-cobblestone-farmhouse-96001396/"}
