It combines vernacular masonry with high-style Adamesque-inspired details and keeps a high degree of integrity inside and out. It is one of only ten surviving cobblestone buildings in the town.","narrative":"This cobblestone house at 21 Mendon-Ionia Road in the hamlet of Mendon, Monroe County, was built around 1833 by a man named Sheldon, whose first name has not been established. It is a two-story, three-bay, side-hall building of variously colored field cobbles on a stone foundation. Its original six-over-six windows, stone sills and lintels, and a side entrance with half-sidelights and a delicate transom survive. The masonry is fairly vernacular, with small irregular quoins and roughly laid rows, yet the Federal detailing is relatively high-style. Inside, the room layout, staircase, panelled reveals and mantelpieces remain largely intact. A brick smokehouse of the 1830s also contributes, while a frame wing from the 1820s has been too altered to count. The house is one of ten surviving cobblestone buildings in Mendon. It was recognized for its architecture, not for any role in local agriculture, since the farm outbuildings are gone.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1833","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic; Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling. The frame wing has been heavily altered and does not contribute, and the original farmstead has been reduced to 1.9 acres.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.976347-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/96001392.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001392/f3b3860601-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001392/f3b3860601-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sheldon_Cobblestone_House_Oct_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sheldon_Cobblestone_House_Oct_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313569","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheldon_Cobblestone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7493472"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/sheldon-cobblestone-house-96001392/"}
