Lindeberg and completed in 1932 on the former Tangley Oaks estate.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is locally significant under Criterion C as an excellent example of Tudor Revival architecture in Lake Bluff. It is the work of Harrie T. Lindeberg, who used a simple palette of brick, stone, terra cotta tile and wood with fine craftsmanship. The house retains excellent original integrity on its exterior and primary interior spaces.","narrative":"Set on 6.2 surviving acres of what was once the 161-acre Tangley Oaks estate, this Lake Bluff manor house was built for Philip D. Armour III and completed in 1932. New York architect Harrie T. Lindeberg designed it in the Tudor Revival style. The building is 384 feet long and 2 1/2 stories tall, with more than 26,000 square feet of living space. Its walls combine soft orange and red brick with Indiana limestone detailing, under a large Ludowici Celadon tile roof pierced by six massive chimneys. More than 330 leaded windows light the interior, and the entrance porch draws on an English gatehouse from 1510. The reinforced concrete frame has not settled, and the exterior has had no additions. Although the house has served commercial uses since 1953, only secondary rooms were altered. It is listed for its architecture, as an excellent local example of Tudor Revival design and of Lindeberg's work.","period_of_significance":"1932","architect_builder":"Lindeberg, Harrie T., Architect","architectural_style":"Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used commercially since 1953, when it was sold to The United Educators; the exterior is unchanged and only secondary interior spaces were converted to offices. Of the original estate, 6.2 acres remain.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.115685-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/26/8933/28893326/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96001342.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001342/6018c5b734-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001342/6018c5b734-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philip_D._Armour_III_House.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Philip_D._Armour_III_House.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28893326","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_D._Armour_III_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24061642"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/lake-county/armour-philip-d-iii-house-96001342/"}
