The farm was larger than most in the area and grew cotton as a cash crop. Its owners included Seth Strange, John Duncan and later W. H. T. Gillespie, who used the house as tenant housing.","narrative":"Built around 1820 by Seth Strange with enslaved labor, this two-story farmhouse on Georgia State Route 51 near Carnesville is a Plantation Plain house with a front shed porch, rear shed rooms, a standing seam metal roof and chimneys at both gable ends. Reeded trim, bull's eye corner blocks and dentil work survive on the exterior. The property also includes a barn, a wood shed and the Strange family cemetery. Strange became a prosperous farmer who owned slaves, which was unusual in the area, and grew cotton as a cash crop on a farm larger than most nearby. John Duncan bought the farm in 1863 and kept it productive until his death in 1890. W. H. T. Gillespie then acquired it and used the house for tenants. It was recognized for its architecture and as a representative farm complex along the Old Federal Road, with a period of significance ending in 1946.","period_of_significance":"C. 1820-1946","architect_builder":"Seth Strange","architectural_style":"OTHER: Plantation Plain","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the house has some altered interior finishes, a c. 1960 remodeled rear shed, and replacement doors and clapboards.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.464555-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/96001298.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001298/b463b094c5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001298/b463b094c5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strange-Duncan_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Strange-Duncan_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206108","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q134305105"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/franklin-county/strange-duncan-house-96001298/"}
