It is one of two front-gabled Italianate houses in Vermont. It retains excellent exterior and interior integrity despite small additions.","narrative":"Built in 1871 at the corner of West Second and North Liberty Streets in Vermont, Illinois, this brick house combines two front-facing gabled blocks, a larger western block holding the entry and a smaller recessed eastern block with cross gables. Italianate details include bracketed cornices, tall narrow segmental-arched windows with keystones and cast iron sills, a four-window polygonal bay, and a hooded entry porch. Steeply pitched gables show some Gothic Revival influence. Inside, a central hall plan, a walnut newel post, turned balusters, shouldered door and window trim, and original built-in shutters survive. A 1920s garage replaced an earlier wood service wing, and a side porch was enclosed in the 1960s, but these changes leave the original character clear. The house was listed for its architecture, as one of only two front-gabled Italianate houses in the village and a well-preserved example of the style. The architect and builder are unknown.","period_of_significance":"1871","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family dwelling; the form reports excellent integrity despite a 1920s garage and enclosed porch and a 1960s side porch enclosure.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.702332-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/14/8911/28891114/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/96001293.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001293/e2b3e3754c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/96001293/e2b3e3754c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Edward_Hamer_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Image_Edward_Hamer_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891114","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Hamer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22034115"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/fulton-county/hamer-edward-house-96001293/"}
