It combines an I-house form and Greek Revival detailing with later Italianate, Gothic Revival and Queen Anne updates. The form states it is the only intact example in Vermont of a mid-19th-century house with late Victorian remodelings.","narrative":"Standing at the corner of North Main and East First Streets in Vermont, Illinois, this two-story brick house dates to about 1855 and was built as an I-house with a central hall, five-bay front and rear ell. Its original Greek Revival features include a sidelit entry with transoms, stone sills and lintels, and a three-part window with fluted pilasters above the door. In the early 1870s Dr. A. L. Hoover had the roof raised and added bracketed cornices and a Gothic Revival and Italianate porch. In 1892 George and Adriana Whitney added a two-story polygonal bay with stained glass, replaced the six-over-six windows with one-over-one sash, and installed Eastlake-style trim and a parquet dining room floor. Local carpenter William H. Daugherty built the bay. The house was recognized for architecture because it layers several mid- and late-19th-century styles on an earlier form, and no other home in the village shows that same combination.","period_of_significance":"C. 1855 - 1892","architect_builder":"William H.
